Plaster Cast Process

Post Events Plaster Casts – Shan’s newest passion!

Starting on a thick earthy slab of pottery clay, items are pressed into a design. Meadows of flowers, beaches of seashells, collages of antiques are arranged in a fantasy. Plaster is then poured into the mold with a resulting beautiful bas relief revealed with the peeling of the clay. Another magical process introduced decades after the 1st crayon wax art calling in the 2nd grade. Miracles continue to happen!

While flowers seem the most prevalent choice amongst other artists currently making similar plaster casts, (see mentor link below), the potential ideas seem endless! As with Encaustic Creations, the use of fabrics, metals, seashells, jewelry… anything really, that can be pressed into clay seems like fair possibility. Thus, I am just getting started.

Watercolor and acrylic paints highlight the layers in the plaster. Such fun!

The addition of a fused layer of encaustic wax adds another touch of soft luminous beauty. Oh, even closer to heaven.

Should it be desired, cremains can gently be added to the plaster pour and/or the encaustic wax layer fused over the top for another precious lasting memorial.
